  1. Objectives:
The student must acquire the competences needed to prepare the plan for a management oriented forest inventory, to coordinate/participate in the realization of such inventories, to process the respective data and to use forest models in order to simulate alternative forest management prescriptions. The student must also get the competences to use all the above tools, in a combined way, to prepare forest management plans

  2. Programme topics:
    1. Forest inventory planning: preparation of the base cartography; selection of a sampling design; decision about the number, type and dimension of the field plots; preparation of field protocols; preparation of data processing protocols
    2. Forest inventory data processing: data organization into an ACCESS data base; elaboration of queries for data processing; data analysis for definition of management units (homogeneous stands); preparation of information for the initialization of forest growth models
    3. Introduction to forest growth models: growth functions and growth functions formulated as different equations; structure of the main types of forest growth models - yield tables; whole stand models; diameter distribution models; individual tree models; structure of a simple process based models, the 3PG model; forest growth models available in Portugal; methods to predict non-wood goods and services and other sustainability indicators
    4. The use of forest models to support the preparation of forest management plans – individual projects made by the students

  3. Assessment:
Course requirements include 2 practical tests (50%) and a final exam (50%).
